wichelp

Our WIC CAN HELP campaign is designed to help the one million California families we serve to survive and protect their children’s health in these tough times. The campaign builds local agency staff capacity to inform and connect WIC families with all possible community assistance programs, from dental care to foreclosure counseling to utility assistance.

WIC CAN HELP identifies lesser-known referral resources, and makes sure the local WIC network can easily share the information with WIC participants using downloadable multi-language flyers or information. Each month, we share a new resource and referral “survival kit” which highlights assistance or program linkages that local WIC staff might suggest to young families in need. WIC CAN HELP is funded by grants from The California Endowment and Kaiser Permanente Community Benefits.

JANUARY: Unemployment Assistance

Although being unemployed is never easy, and looking for a job is a job in itself, WIC Can Help by referring families to the following resources (links are in red).

Help Online

The State of California's Employment Development Department (EDD) website is rich with resources and updated processes for those seeking help while they are out of a job.

  • Unemployment Insurance (UI) provides weekly payments to workers who lose their jobs through no fault of their own.
  • Jobs & Training (Workforce Services Branch) for those seeking jobs
  • One-Stop Career Centers (listed by county and city)
  • CalJOBS, California's Internet system for linking employer job listings and job seeker résumés.
  • Health Coverage -- COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) provides eligible individuals with the ability to continue group health insurance benefits during periods of unemployment.
  • Paid Family Leave for when you have to care for a family member and can't work

Help by Phone

For folks who don't have easy access to the internet, information and support is just a phone call away. There are too many numbers to list here, so we give you the links to the phone number lists at EDD.

  • Unemployment Insurance: There are separate telephone numbers for customers who speak English, Spanish, Chinese, and Vietnamese or who call using a teletypewriter.
  • One-Stop Career Centers (listed by county and city) including Jobs & Training and other information for job-seekers
  • Paid Family Leave, with toll-free phone numbers in seven languages plus TTY
