Breastfeeding Advocacy
CWA works with multiple partners to improve breastfeeding rates among low-income women in California. We promote policies that increase initiation and duration of breastfeeding, particularly exclusive breastfeeding, as well as greater acceptance of breastfeeding as the cultural norm. Here, we provide resources for breastfeeding support and advocacy. Visit our Library for more breastfeeding education and policy resources.
Hospitals
The in-hospital support a mother receives before and after birth greatly impacts breastfeeding success. CWA and partners develop reports and fact sheets each year to highlight breastfeeding rates in California hospitals by county. Use these resources to advocate for improved policies and practices and give credit to hospitals doing a great job.
Lactation Accommodation
When women return to work or school after childbirth, they need environmental and administrative support to continue breastfeeding successfully. Lactation accommodation is good for employers, employees, families, the economy and society. Explore state and federal laws, resources, and information pertaining to lactation accommodation in the workplace and in schools, plus a list of California’s Mother Baby Friendly Workplace Award winners.
Health Centers
Discover resources such as 9 Steps to Breastfeeding Friendly Health Clinics and the accompanying toolkit, plus case studies and more resources to help make breastfeeding the norm in health care settings.
Action Network
Members of the California Breastfeeding Coalition and CWA collaborate to address the systemic and institutional barriers to breastfeeding at the policy level. BFAN participants are the voices for breastfeeding families in their communities, in Sacramento and in Washington DC.
